Bi Yuan Wan, meaning "Sinusitis Relief Pill," is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula specifically designed to address nasal and sinus conditions. The name "Bi Yuan" directly refers to sinusitis — inflammation of the sinus cavities.
This formula is traditionally used for Wind-Heat invading the nose – a TCM pattern that closely resembles acute and chronic sinusitis, nasal obstruction, and allergic rhinitis in Western medicine terms . When external pathogens (Wind) combined with internal Heat become trapped in the nasal passages, the result is nasal congestion, thick yellow or green discharge, sinus pressure, and sometimes headache or fever.
Unlike decongestant sprays that provide temporary relief by narrowing blood vessels, Bi Yuan Wan works by clearing the underlying Heat, dispelling the Wind, and opening the nasal passages from within. It addresses both the symptoms (blocked nose, discharge) and the root cause (pathogenic Heat and Wind).
You may benefit from Bi Yuan Wan if you experience the following:
-
Nasal congestion that feels heavy or blocked, making it difficult to breathe through your nose
-
Thick nasal discharge — this may be yellow, green, or white
-
Sinus pressure or pain in the forehead, around the eyes, or in the cheeks
-
Headache that feels worse in the morning or when bending forward
-
Reduced sense of smell (hyposmia) or taste
-
Post-nasal drip — mucus draining down the back of the throat
-
Facial fullness or a feeling of pressure behind the eyes
-
Fever or feeling feverish, especially with nasal symptoms
-
Sensitivity to cold air or wind — symptoms may worsen with weather changes
-
Symptoms that improve with warm compresses or worsen in dry, heated indoor air
-
Recurring sinus infections or chronic sinusitis that does not fully resolve
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pattern is called “Wind-Heat invading the nose” or “Heat toxin accumulating in the lung” . The nose is considered the “opening” of the lung in TCM, so heat or pathogens affecting the lung often manifest as nasal symptoms. When Wind-Heat becomes trapped in the sinus cavities, it can lead to the thick, yellow discharge, facial pressure, and congestion characteristic of sinusitis.
